One of the songs we’ll sing this week has the lines We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord. And we offer up to You, the sacrifices of thanksgiving…and joy.
I’ve been mulling this thought over for days—How is praise a “sacrifice”? Animals, grain, and other offerings brought to the Lord’s house during the Old Covenant definitely cost the bearer something; it was a monetary offering. When David wanted to buy Araunah’s threshing floor so he could build an altar to the Lord, he exclaimed, “I will not sacrifice to the Lord something that cost me nothing.” (You can read this story in the last chapter of 2 Samuel.)
What does it cost you to praise the Lord? Maybe it’s a simple as the time and effort it takes to get the kids ready on a Sunday morning or as difficult as forgiving and making amends with someone so that your heart can be pure before the Lord. Whatever God is asking of you, make the sacrifice and come into His house this week to praise him with thanksgiving and joy.
